FAQ's about Instant Alert Network (IAN)

Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. If you don't find what you're looking for, please contact us directly at 1.800.428.7173.

HOW DO WE SET UP OUR NETWORK OF IAN ALERT RECIPIENTS?

A Customer Service Specialist (CSS) with Pathfinder Intelligence, Inc. will set up an administrative website login and provide a setup template that you can use to define the contacts and groups/locations within the IAN system. There is no limit to the number of employees who can receive an alert, and local law enforcement can also be included on the contact list. Should someone leave the employer, their name and number can simply be removed from the contact list by a client administrator.

HOW DOES OUR STAFF GET ACCESS TO IAN?

Once you or your administrator has determined the specific employees who will require IAN access, they can simply go to the Apple AppStore or Android Marketplace and download the app. The IAN system will then send each employee a Registration Code that will activate the app, as well as a text message that allows employees to opt-in to receive messages from the IAN system.

WHAT TYPES OF ALERTS CAN WE SEND WITH IAN?

IAN allows you to choose from a dynamic selection of up to thirteen different alert types and make them available in customized combinations to the groups you define in the system. For example, you may have a group for one department that only has access to two buttons. Either of these buttons could alert the staff and an administrator.

WHAT IS REQUIRED TO MAKE IAN FUNCTION PROPERLY?

In order to receive an audible IAN alert, cell phones must be powered on and not be silenced. IAN is configured to send both text and e-mail alerts. If the cellular signal is not strong enough to support receipt of the text-based alert, a standard push notification with Wi-Fi connection will still support receipt of the e-mail alert.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN IAN ALERT IS TRIGGERED?

When triggered, the IAN app sends both a text and an e-mail message to all recipient contacts set up on the network. Phones can be set to sound a consistent “Alarm” ringtone, and this alarm sound will continue until the message is read. The person who triggers the alarm is identified in the message with the geo-location capability that provides the location of the person who triggers an alert. An iPhone or Android smartphone is required to send an alert, but anyone with a text or e-mail capable cell phone can receive the instant alert.

CAN IAN AUTOMATICALLY REACH A 911 DISPATCHER?

IAN's direct-dial function can be configured to dial 911, or it can be set up to directly alert other first responder contacts (i.e., police, fire department, etc).

WILL MY STAFF RECEIVE TRAINING ON IAN?

Yes. A Safety Representative will work with your administrator to integrate IAN training into existing emergency planning efforts. In addition to regularly-scheduled IAN drills, training materials will be provided, and your staff will also have ongoing access to training resources on the IAN website.

HOW DOES IAN FIT IN WITH AND SUPPORT WHAT WE ALREADY DO IN THE EVENT OF A THREAT OR EMERGENCY?

IAN is designed to give your staff an extra layer of protection – regardless of current emergency or threat response procedures. IAN could quickly become the primary first-response mechanism for each of your facilities.

CAN IAN BE INCORPORATED INTO OUR EXISTING SAFETY DRILLS?

Yes, IAN can easily be tested during a drill. Our Safety Representative will work with clients to conduct IAN tests as needed.

WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR IAN?

Pathfinder Intelligence, Inc. has established a dedicated Help Desk e-mail address and toll-free number to field questions on IAN implementation and usage.

HOW QUICKLY CAN YOU SEND IAN ALERT MESSAGES, AND CAN THEY BE PRE-CONFIGURED TO MATCH OUR EXISTING THREAT RESPONSE MESSAGING?

IAN can send up to 30 text messages per second - 1,800 per minute - so response time is almost immediate. In addition, IAN text and e-mail messages can be pre-set to include your specific alert language (i.e., Shelter in Place, Lock-down, etc).

IS IAN AVAILABLE 24/7?

IAN is built on advanced Microsoft technology that provides multi-location data back-up and redundancy. As a result, the system features 99.95% availability.

CAN THE SYSTEM BE "HACKED" TO SET OFF FALSE ALARMS?

IAN’s patent pending technology uses a remote, secure database not connected to the district. The system is Department of Defense compliant, minimizing the possibility of a false alarm or security breaches.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A FALSE ALARM IS TRIGGERED BY A STAFF MEMBER?

If IAN is activated unintentionally, or if a perceived threat does not materialize, an “All Clear” response can be sent from the IAN website by an authorized administrator, or an administrator can send it from their “All Clear” button on their smartphone. This response will go to all contacts who received the false alert.

Most false alarms with IAN can be prevented by “password protecting” your smartphone. This is highly recommended, because if your phone is lost or stolen, you would want to keep your information out of someone else’s hands.

WHAT IF SOMEONE UPGRADES THEIR PHONE?

If the phone number does not change, the current version of the IAN app will simply need to be downloaded to the new phone. If the phone number changes, an administrator will need to update the contact record on the IAN website accordingly, and resend a Registration Code.

WHAT ENHANCEMENTS WILL IAN INCLUDE IN FUTURE RELEASES?

Pathfinder Intelligence, Inc. is constantly developing enhancements to improve your campus security. When those enhancements are added, our clients will be the first to benefit from the changes.

SHOULD THE GENERAL PUBLIC KNOW WE HAVE IAN?

Yes! We strongly suggest posting the IAN window signs conspicuously around campus as a warning. This may help reduce the probability of becoming a target.
